Do I need to pay VAT if not mentioned.

If someone offers me a quote and they make no mention of charging VAT at all, or being vat registered, do i need to pay it?

I was quoted £1000 but when the invoice arrived it had VAT added on: do I have to pay?

Yes you do have to pay the vat. If your business is vat registered and the item was purchased for the business then you can reclaim the vat.

I dont think thats the issue at question. Its the fact that the OP was quoted £1000 initially with no mention of VAT, but now the invoice has come through its £1000+VAT = £1175.

If someone had quoted me £1000 i would have expected to see an invoice for £851.06 + VAT = £1000.

It sounds like a very cheeky way of getting an extra £175 out of the OP

    I think it's slightly difficult.

If the supplier is VAT registered and normally supplies other VAT registered businesses, it's perfectly reasonable to quote the amount excluding VAT as the VAT is irrelevant.

If the supplier normally supplies domestic customers or non-VAT registered businesses, it should quote including VAT.

But either way, it's your responsibility to ensure you understand what you are agreeing to when you agree a price with a supplier.

Most vat registered businesses (myself included) would quote £1000+VAT to clarify. I think the O/P will have an uphill struggle to do anything about this, but i guess it obviously pays to ask the question when getting a quote 'is that plus, or including VAT?'

We recently had a couple of roof quotes: one came through with, and the other without VAT, so I queried it. The one without was a smaller company who'd not long set up: I would have been wary if he hadn't come by strong personal recommendation. He explained that he was likely to have to register very soon, so the eventual bill might need to have VAT on it.

So I think I'm with those saying "you should always check ..."

Interestingly enough, I was responsible for organising a training day at work, and was given a quote without any mention of VAT. The supplier (amazingly, given how much he was charging for one day's training) was not VAT registered so the amount quoted was the true amount due.

I'd assumed it had to be "+VAT" so we came in under budget on the event.
