PVA and plaster skim

Im due to get a room skimmed by a local plasterer.

He commented that as my walls are dry lined plasterboard and that board is not in great shape that the walls would ideally be bonded with PVA first.
I said I would do that bit (thinking it would save a bit of cost - and how hard can it be??)

However, would cheap stuff do or would I be best with the dear stuff.
Screwfix have 5l tubs ranging from £10 to £22
