Honda Civic or VW Golf

Hi
I'm about to buy a used car and am trying to decide between a Honda Civic ES 1.6 desiel or a VW Golf SE 1.6 desiel. Both cars are 63 regs and both have about 11500 miles on the clock. The Golf will be about £1000 cheaper taking into account the better trade in VW will give me on my existing car.
My pocket tells to get the Golf, but I keep hearing that Honda is a lot more reliable than VW and has better real world fuel economy and the Honda also has slightly more bells and whistles than the Golf.
Does anyone have experience of both cars and is able to give me some feedback on them.
Thanks for your help

My personal opinion.
You probably like the look of one car.
You probably will like the reliability of the other.
Take your choice.0 -

The golf IS the better car dynamically. The Civic is dynamically average.
I'd say the mk7 golf is in a different class to the civic actually.
Well capable of 60+ mpg too. I get 66mpg in my mk6 but the mk7 is a bit heavier.
I've done about 1,000 miles in a mk7 and its very impressive.
Probably the civic has the edge for reliability, so if thats the most important thing to you.... BUT the Golfs a better car.0 -
How long do you expect to keep it for? If it's 3 years or so then retained value is important. Look it up on what car or such like but I expect the golf holds it's value better. If your planning to keep it for 10 years then this is irreverent.0

I would have the Honda.
VAV products have overrated reliability and always have done.
The Honda is better looking imho and it is Made in the UK0 -
I remember reading top gears review of the Golf, something like
This is the only family hatch you need, so dont waste time looking at others, spend it haggling with the dealer.0 -
I would go Honda, (but then my last 3 cars have been Honda).
Reliability is right up there out of all car brands, room for 5 adults in the civic, massive boot.
I dont know much about VW but when i bought my current civic (58 plate so model before yours) I looked at the Golf. Went with Honda because the Golf didnt feel as "sturdy" (cant think of a better word) than my previous w-plate Bora was, boot was smaller, and the general owners reviews i saw online were mixed. granted this was an older Golf, Honda's to me have got better through the years...
That being said, you could buy Honda and get a nightmare car or buy a Golf and love it and never have an issue with it...
As people have said, if you really cant decide go with the one where you like the look of it, or where the salesman is just a bit more genuine and respectful?0 -

Thats all one needs to know then, anything they recommend i wouldn't touch with a barge pole.
Have they fixed the EGR joke on Mk6 Golf yet, enjoy that bill when it arrives.0 -
Definitely go for the Civic. I think the Golf is overpriced for what it is.0

For a £1000 difference I would take the Golf and then worst case scenario you've got a grand to spend on repair before it has cost as much as the Civic. Best case you've got a grand towards a nice holiday."We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0
