hi

my 2002 honda civic has one tyre which is showing some cracks on side wall. the tread still looks intact and on visual inspection there is not much wear on thread depth but i havent measured it to be sure.

can anyone recommend a medium range brand of tyre? there seems infinite number of choices ranging from very budget to high end like michellin. even michelins dont seem to get all round good reviews so confused.

i do 7/8000 miles per year, mostly in city.

other three tyres look in reasonable shape so am thinking of changing only one of the tyres. the size is 185/40/R14

have a look at the online sites, go for a midrange tyre as you wont notice any difference, it doesnt have to match the current tyre, even though many on here will tell you it should.

when you have decided, ring round your local tyre centres to see if they can match or beat the price

    is it really a 185/40/14?

Try Blackcircles.com as you can get them fitted by local garage and get Tesco Clubcard points too.

Thanks. Its 185/70 and not 185/40 as per my post.

Thanks. Was just looking at it. They said they have club card boost to convert vouchers to 4x value but can't find it on tesco website. Thanks

Choosing tyres with wet grip B at the very least eliminates most ditchfinders.

I'd suggest looking at Uniroyal Rain Expert, GoodYear Efficient Grip, Vredestein Sportrac 5 in no particular order.

Out of that lot, I'd be going for the Avons, £43 H or £38 T speed rated depending on your car's requirements.
  • Presuming this is on the rear, as it's cracked yet has plenty of tread?
Wouldn't mix on front, but back is ok :)

are you sure that the tyre size quoted is correct a 40 profile on a 14 wheel is a very low profile and if you can find them they will be a very rare tyre

ha ha just seen your updated post with a change to a 70 profile that is more like it

if the tyres are starting to crack then it could be to do with the age of the tyre and would be worth checking the other tyres as anything of 10 years old should be changed due to age and not the tread depth left

    Thanks.

I bought car 6 years ago. I changed two tyres about 3 years ago. So other two are at least 6 years old. So will probably replace two to go with other two replaced 3 years ago.
