Are you by any chance related to my buyer, constantly coming round, bringing builders on more than one occasion, staying for two hours with builders when told could only do so for half an hour as had to go out? And on completion day rudely complaining that it took an hour longer to clear the house than the removers predicted even though they weren't moving in that day?

I would quite happily have throttled the pair of them.

not me! honest! I went alone and to check the damp the survey had revealed.
  • People may have several test drives before buying a car. A house is substantially more expensive and yet people begrudge more than one or two viewings???

Yes, of different vehicles. Not the same one each time.

But it's not just viewings - there is the survey and any subsequent surveys should any serious problems arise from the original survey.

The couple who offered on my house had three viewings before an offer. I would have said that is more than enough to decide if you like a house and viewings can be quite disruptive.

I think it is quite normal for buyers and sellers to get fed up with each other during the house buying process. It takes forever, can be rather confrontational and you're never sure who is causing delays.

As long as you like the house and are happy with the price that you are paying, then I'd say carry on and just try and stay cheerful. If you have any niggling doubts about the property itself, then that's when I'd start to worry.

I've viewed lots of properties and been shown round by the vendor's relatives, when my Dad was buying a flat in particular, as most of the people selling were at work and we preferred to view during the day.

Good luck, hope it all works out for you.

As a vendor, I would be starting to get a bit annoyed after more than a couple of viewings. From experience, buyers who want to to undertake numerous viewings are unsure about the property and far more likely to drop out of the sale and waste everyone's time.

    Couldn't disagree more.

The biggest purchase of someone's life - do you think 2 viewings totalling perhaps 30 mins is enough?

I think I saw my house about 5 times, including one with an electrician and one with a bathroom fitter to gauge the amount of work I would need to do to get it habitable and safe. Why would I waste my own time going to a place loads of times if I wasn't serious?
  • I don't think you are being unreasonable. You should be able to view the house as many times as you feel is necessary. Perhaps ask the EA to accompany you in future though? That way the vendor won't need to make sure they or a relative is there.

Demanding that you respond to everything immediately when the ball is in your court while themselves taking forever when it's in theirs - totally normal seller behaviour.

Demanding that the survey is carried out/approved mortgage offer is confirmed immediately (even though these things are the results of processes carried out by third parties, the timing of which is completely outside your control once you've sent off your application) while leaving their questionnaires and pre-contract enquiries lying around for weeks because they can't be bothered filling them in - totally normal seller behaviour.

Disappearing for weeks on end at critical times, without telling their solicitor or the estate agent, and despite it being they who were so insistent on a quick exchange a moment ago, leaving their affairs in the hands of random family members who know nothing about what's going on and are not authorised to make any decisions - apparently normal seller behaviour, or at least sufficiently close to normal not to be a cause for concern according to my solicitor.

Being generally awkward in the eyes of the other party - normal seller and buyer behaviour as soon as any single thing about the process starts to go less than perfectly.

Getting twitchy and wondering whether you're making a big mistake and should walk away while you still can - absolutely 100% normal FTB behaviour, especially if you are buying on your own and aren't young enough to have parents etc on hand to advise you about what's normal etc.

The only reasons to pull out of this purchase are that you no longer want the house, or you've found something out that makes you think it's now worth less than your agreed price, or if you have genuine concerns that something funny is going on (such as - and this happened to me - discovering three days before exchange that the house is not in fact in the seller's name). Anything else, relax and count to ten, because you can bet the next place will be no different.

You should be able to have a few good looks, you could be spending 150k+ all on one quick view?? I spend more time looking round a car than most seem to do round a house. You are the buyer, if you want to check out your biggest ever purchase they should have the red carpet out for you not whinging that you want another look.
