is putty still "best" for wooden windows?

the putty needs replacing in my garage windows. These are single glazed wooden frames and there is absolutely no need to replace the window frame at all so that is not at issue.
However, I was wondering if there is a "better" alternative to (linseed oil) putty nowadays for use in wooden windows?
Mastic? Something else?

Linseed oil putty is still the best for existing windows.Hack off the old face putty, seal the rebate/timber with an oil based primer.Allow to dry and then replace the face putty. Leave for 7 days to form a skin on the putty and then prime, undercoat and top coat.
If putty is applied correctly and painted correctly it can last for 40-60 years.
For new windows the better products are tapes. There are various types from mastic type based such as ARBO tape to foam type tapes such as glazing security tapes. You can buy both off the net from companies such as reddiseals..0 -
Putty every time for simple/old windows.
But don't forget, if you keep up with the painting regime, they will last 2/3 x longerI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

the windows are 47 years 5 months and 16 days old - still have the invoice from when the garage was extended
and unlike Trigger's broom handle and brush head, it is still the original woodwork and glass; the paint is, however, somewhat newer0
