Plenty of used cars at local second hand car traders still have tax on them e.g. couple of months here, 6 months there etc.
Come 1st October, will all the leftover tax on these cars sitting on forecourts become invalid, or will that only apply to cars that get traded in after the 1st Oct?

The tax will get refunded to the previous owner after 1st Oct and the new keeper will need to retax the car.
If the garage has registered the car in their name they'll get the refund but most don't so it will be the person they bought it from.
Some ex-owners are probably in for a nice surprise.0 -
The cars already traded in wont get a refund. But send off the yellow slip after / dated 1/10 will trigger a refund to the keeper.0
