Limited Internet Access ???

Having real problems with my internet connection.
Service provider Orange which I believe is now EE. Netgear router
Have laptop running Windows 7 with AVAST antivirus
Have Samsung Phone
Have Kindle Fire
My OH has ipad
For a couple of months we have been experiencing very flaky internet.
Sometimes can connect, sometimes not. When connected the internet will stop working after a while and I get either no internet access or limited internet access.
Have done all the usual switching off router and then rebooting laptop. Sometimes works for a while, sometimes not.
Have run the BT diagnostic for internet speed. Spoke to EE who said my reading was OK and what I could expect. They did a couple of things and asked me to make a couple of changes. Said things should be OK. No problem they could see.
Climbing the walls now trying to understand why I have such flaky/non- existent access.
Could anyone give me any advice please?

  • Have you had your phone line tested? I'd suggest starting off by unplugging all your phones, etc and just having the router plugged in to the master socket to see if it's any different.

I've had Netgear routers for a few years but have always found them to be unreliable (I'd never recommend one), though if this problem only started recently this may not be your issue.

Sounds like it might be the wireless not the connection.

When you lose connection does the internet light on the router go off (4th light along) ?

  • Thanks will try this. Have had the router for a while. Since I last had problems and Wanadoo said a new router would sort it but I had to sign up for another 12 months to get it free. Reluctant to ring them again as the same will happen and I think I may need to change.

could you be being 'throttled' i.e. they reduce your interweb speed because you download 'too much'.
this happens with us although we are only on 1.4Mbps (can't skype or stream movies) so it is very very noticable.

There are 3 main channels on your router, 1, 6 and 11. It may be worth switching channels for a better signal. http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/network-wifi/3325316/how-change-wi-fi-channel/
