If you get national rail from Ilford to Liverpool Street or even Stratford and then complete your journey on the tube a lot of the venues you want to go to you would get 241 on just ask for a booklet at the ticket office and away you go :) Check before you travel though as sometime there are alterations to the route at weekends

Have a great tip also Winter Wonderland will be on at Hyde Park when you visit it can be expensive but nice to wonder round in the evening when all the lights are on

  • Please be aware that Central London will be very very crowded. Have been down for the first weekend in December for the last 3 years but never again. Packed tubes, playing sardines just to get down to the platforms, crawling buses. We arrived in the West End about 5.30pm on a Saturday -plenty of time to get a pre theatre meal we thought but we couldn't get in anywhere. It took us an hour to get in at backstreet diner, just arrived there at the right time as a table came free otherwise we would have been in trouble. We still had a good time but just be aware that everything will take longer than you think & be a bit more difficult.

The tube isn't that busy at non-peak hours though. Going to Covent garden without a reservation on a Saturday night is crazy!

You can find deals on lastminute.com for those if you want to pre-book
  • Thanks to all for your advice so far. We're wondering about staying in a Travelodge at Watford so we might go to Harry Potter on Sunday. Is this too far to be hopping backwards and forwards?

The Watford TL or Premier Inns have good priced rooms for December. It would be 10 minutes walk to Watford High Street station from the Watford central PI or TL and then 50 minutes into Euston on the all stops train. It would be about 15- 20 minutes walk to Watford Junction station for the fast train to London Euston which would take 20 minutes and the Harry Potter studios shuttle bus goes from outside Watford Junction station. The fast train is quicker from Watford Jct but the fares are a lot more at £6.20 for a single off peak journey on Oyster to London as in an outer zone 9+ (£16.80 daily off peak cap), compared with £3.90 from Watford High Street station in zone 8 (£11.60 daily off peak cap).

A lot of sights /places to visit are easily walkable ( this is aimed at the OP)
