Help identifying plant/weed/bamboo?

Sorry, no photo, maybe tomorrow.

We moved into a house in March. In one of the beds was a "stalky shrub/bamboo" looking plant:
- in March they were maybe 4ft tall.
- quite broad, fairly round in proportion, lacy leaves. Stalks think but hollow.
- some old, dead, hollow stalks, dark in colour, very easy to pull (dead ones have no roots).
- in the Summer the plants grew a "grass like" seedy top (bad description, but looked more like grass than flowers).
- now, September, they are 6ft/7ft tall and appear to be dying (stalks drying out, leaves dying and turning yellow then dark and crispy).
- the clusters appear to be creeping a bit along the bed.

Any idea what it is? Have had a good look around the internet, but can't find anything vaguely similar.

I have a feeling that I should probably be doing something to contain/control it...
