I recently passed my driving test and when it came the time for my dad to renew his own car insurance he enquired about adding me as a named driver. This was with direct line, however they said they wouldn't insure me until I had my licence for a year. Is this normal, or just with this company and why?

They are free to trade with who ever they wish, providing its not discriminatory. If they don't want to add you to Dads policy until you have had a licence for a year, its up to them.
You are an exceptionally high risk in your first twelve months, with most drivers having an accident in that time frame. They don't want to take the risk on so wont offer you insurance.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
You might be best if your dad's prepared to change insurers. Including insurers that fit a box to monitor your driving will usually help new drivers, but your dad may not want the hassle. Also if his car is in a high insurance bracket it may be cheaper to buy a little car for yourself and insure it, though adding him as a named driver to your policy may reduce premium0

Just been through this (a couple of months ago) with my daughter, and what you describe sounds reasonably normal for quite a few insurance companies.
Prior to my daughter passing her test, insurance for her in a 1.6 Focus was only £720 with her as the policyholder/main driver. The minute she passed her test it rose to £1202.
I'm guessing it went up due to the fact she is now allowed to drive on her own as opposed to having myself or stepmum sat next to her.Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it0
