dvla vs NMR mileage weird?

Hi guys,

I've just looked at a Toyota Yaris 04 that I really liked and actually arranged for a test drive as well, for tomorrow.

Last minute I've run an AA Car Data Check and everything seems fine apart from the part about the mileage. I'm getting the message "Data currently held on the National Mileage Register (NMR) indicates that there may be a mileage discrepancy on this vehicle.":

Date recorded Recorded by Mileage reading Total
26-Mar-2008 Manufacturer 37,087 37,087
14-Aug-2008 Manufacturer 70,250 70,250
18-Mar-2009 Manufacturer 70,250 70,250
05-Aug-2009 Manufacturer 48,202 48,202
03-Feb-2010 Manufacturer 52,414 52,414
21-May-2014 DVLA 80,000 80,000

It just seems weird (from 37,087 to 70,250 then back down to 48,202) so I'm not sure what to do.

Is this just a typo mistake or does the above mean that the car was clocked, what's your opinion? I would really appreciate any feedback.

many thanks.

The 70,250 in both Aug 08 and Mar 09 does seem odd - could easily have been some sort of data error.
Are you able to look at the MOT history online? That usually shows the recorded mileage. All you need is the registration and document reference number off the V5C, or the test number off the latest MOT.

The 70k readings probably should've been 40k, and were mis-typed.

It's unlikely that it went from 37k to 70k in less than five months.

You are in banger territory here so just ensure you give the car a thorough once over.

Also check the MOT for the last few mileages they should be accurate.

Does mot or service history show any mileage being done between 2008 and 2009. Very odd to have same mileage many months apart.

If that's genuine then was it off the road due to accident or some other reason?
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Unfortunately I'm not able to look at the MOT online, so I am having doubts if I should make the one hour tube journey to see the car or don't bother.

The mileage at the last five MOTs is printed onto the certificate. When you go to look at the car, ask to see the MOT certificate. Make a note of the number on it, so you can check the test history in more detail online later.
so I am having doubts if I should make the one hour tube journey to see the car or don't bother.

It's fairly clearly just an input error, given how glaringly wrong those out-of-whack entries are, but...

Only if you have the V5C Doc Ref or the certificate number from the most recent MOT. It's just the expiry of the current test which is publicly available.

Ask the seller for the MOT test number off the most recent certificate. With that and the registration number, you can lookup the MOT (and mileage) history online. If the seller won't give it, don't bother going.

Thanks for the advice, I gave the seller a call and I was able to get the certificate number so I'm just checking online as we speak.

It seems that on here the mileage reading is more accurate than on the AA test at least. The car failed a couple of times in the past years but mainly due to fog lights, windscreen wipers or stop lights not working properly, so it's not that bad (considering the age).

So nothing even remotely major, but indicative of a lack of basic maintenance.
