Do you service your washing machine?

Options
As above really, and how much? I'm talking 'getting a bloke in' to sort it, not yourself.

Our is an Indesit washer/dryer which is integrated into the cupboards (floor standing though) and I've looked to replace it is £400 when it does fail. It's over 4 years old now, however showing few signs of failing (e.g. it doesnt get overloaded, no knocks or bangs etc) but I dont know whether I should be servicing it or not?

A car with moving parts receives an annual service, shouldn't a washing machine? It is used 2 - 4 times a week (roughly 600 uses total)

What do you reckon?

There is no such thing as a service. Have you read the manual? Start saving for a miele washing machine they last a life time
Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring

Just run a descaler through it every now and again if in a hard water area (you can use white vinegar), and check the pump isn't clogged up if it isn't draining properly (instructions will be in the user manual) and everything should be OK.

No such thing as a service.
  • The short answer is no. It's inconceivable that you'll save enough to pay for the callout charges, and there's little safety risk (unlike gas boilers). If you been servicing for the last four years you would probably have spent about £280 already, that's nearly three quarters of the way to your new price.

I've actually done a clean up, on mine today using soda crystals

Have also bought a service pack from http://www.dr-beckmann.co.uk/products/appliance-cleaners/service-it-washing-machine-cleaner/

And I'm assuing either will have some benefit

If you are only getting 4 years with 2-4 washes a week then you are either doing something seriously wrong or buying seriously cheap crap that is way overpriced.

The most we have ever spent on a washing machine is £250, and every single one has lasted more than 4 years at an average wash rate of 2 washes per day for 6 days a week.

The only "servicing" ours has ever seen is a white vinegar wash at 65° C (which is a so called "maintenance" cycle) approximately every 3 - 6 months.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it
  • I was merely wondering what the general consensus was, or if it was even possible to prolong the life of an otherwise reliable and perfectly fine machine. For reference we bought the house new and the white goods were already chosen and installed, I had no input in the decision, thats just the replacement cost like for like.

I havent been servicing it save for soda crystals in every wash, hot wash every now and again etc.

I was more concerned about belts wearing out or bearings needing greasing or other mechanical gubbins like that and catching them before anything goes wrong! The manual is next to useless, doesnt even tell you how much power each cycle uses let alone anything else. The filter is a pain to get to as it is hidden behind the kitchen kick boards which means taking half the cupboards apart to get to it, but I did empty it a year or so ago when something was clanging around in there.

I didnt think the finances would add up, just wanted to make sure
