No Smoke Alarm - House Inspection Soon

Any landlord/agent that does not provide smoke alarms to protect landlord's investment - apart for tenant safety - is an idiot & not to be trusted.
What else haven't they bothered with? Gas safety certificate, safe electrics, rent declared to HMRC taxman (even if making a loss), landlord insurance??0 -

Of course I will buy standalone ones and the cost doesn't bother me but obviously I would rather ones be fitted properly.... Living alone = if there is a fire in the night and I don't notice it as I'm sleeping I will be trapped in my room as my windows do not open in my room aside from small top vent ones as I'm on the ground floor.
Get yourself one of those little hammer things that are specifically designed to break glass in an emergency and keep it in the room , easily accessible.0 -

Unless the building is less than about 20 years old there is no obligation to have such alarm fitted (unless there are special rules for flats, which I'm not aware of).
Therefore, obviously you can ask for one, but you cannot demand one.
How do you know how long I've lived in my property? It's actually been 8 weeks, 2 months....I've still been unpacking because I work a very busy job and haven't had much time to myself so have only just got some time to get everything sorted.
I have clearly already said I will buy some stand-alone ones but wanted 'Friendly' advice as to whether or not my letting agency were required to provide them. Also my property is only 8 years old, so your point regarding age of property may prove helpful if you'll stop being so shirty. Yes, my safety in my home IS a big deal thanks. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I do have gas safety, electrical safety test certificate and I go through a big agency for my area so hopefully they aren't too bad! I agree though, I'm finding it so weird there is no smoke alarm!!! I even have a burglar alarm! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Just buy a smoke alarm rather than waiting for a formal fix - isn't peace of mind worth that?
Hi There,
No it's definitely smoking from the damaged areas... It was used regularly until about 3 days ago when I found it was quite acrid smoke..
I am of course going to buy a smoke alarm, was just wondering where I stood on asking my letting agent for one.. I know they're cheap but I have a very strict budget so if they were required to provide them I would have preferred that, seems not! So I will off to purchase one on my lunch break

I'd call up report the damage to the hob - say it's smoking etc and can they repair or replace and coincidently at the same time you noticed no smoke alarms - did they mean to fit them and see what they say.Stuck on the carousel in Disneyland's Fantasyland

Great idea, thanks.. I can then show them at the house inspection and then if required follow up with writing. I must say my letting agency haven't at all been bad so hopefully it continues on.. I've had some rotten letting agents in the past so I'm praying this one is better!!! :AThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. Another nice tenant.
I would think that an 8 year old flat should have been built with mains fire alarms.0 -

I'm a great tenant, I still don't know what your problem is?
Everyone else provided friendly advice and you just attacked me.
Didn't realise upon moving in to my property it didn't have smoke alarms and now that I have realised I would like to solve the problem. Said I was willing to buy one, didn't know if LL had to provide one so asked here first before wasting money and contacting them. I realised there were no smoke alarms WHILST checking my burglar alarm sensors were all working.... Having moved in 2 months ago, starting my new job the NEXT day and then working 12 hours a day for god knows how long, I haven't really had a chance to stop. I do take my safety seriously clearly, but unfortunately life happened and I wasn't in a situation where I thought to check until now, it was something I had assumed would be in place, as you said yourself, an 8 year old flat seems likely to have been fitted with them. Now I have realised it's not fitted with them I am immediately correcting the situation. SO YES. I do take my safety seriously. I don't think that makes me a bad tenant. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
