Removal Of Old Tiles

I wish to renew the old tiles in my bathroom. Any hints on how to remove them and on any equipment that would make the job easier.

Thank You

If your removing them all you need a bolster and a mallet...........................chip them off basically ....then replaster, not a nice job :-/

Or tile over them,if the are sound.
A thankyou is payment enough .
  • I'm doing the same job in my kitchen at the moment, by accident I found using the sharp end of a tac hammer to basically smash them off easiest. I had the pro's in to do my bathroom and they took most of the plaster off the walls with the tiles, I'm hardly damaging the plaster at all.
  • What is a tac hammer?
    Titch :)
  • I used one of these: http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=108070
I'm sure there is a £20 version around - will probably pay for itself as you wont have to plaster (assuming its reasonably sound to start with. Screwfix is probably a good bet- but their website is down at the moment.

Superb finish as you can get under the grout once the tile is removed. I was doing it on plasterboard - only a few little nicks to the paper - definitely no holes.

If you get fed up get a paint scraper, pop it behind the tile and whack it. Tiles come off very fast but you might need to rerivet the handle a couple of times (or have a few cheap paint scrapers to hand).

PS Next time, I will take the wall down as it will be quicker to replasterboard it.

if you are lucky and the adhesive used is not water proof.Knock off a couple of tiles then pour water down the gap ,leave it a bit then they will just pop off.If the glue is water proof knock em off with a chisel and buy some plaster.

To remove tile adhesive, use a steam wallpaper stripper. You can pick one up in Argos for about £20 for the most basic version. Works a treat and doesn't damage the wall at all. My boss told me that it worked and leant me her wallpaper stripper to try, which I've had for a year. :o Time to give it back, methinks. Of course I only got down to get the adhesive off this weekend past. ;)
  • be very careful when you remove the tiles nearest the door frame as the force of the hammer and bolster could knock the door frame out. You will know if you have done this when your door suddenly wont shut :(
