I was looking for a smart tv some months ago. It took me a while to understand that not all smart tvs have the same on demand channels available. Some just have BBc iplayer and 4OD, others will have BBC iplayer and ITV player...
I think only Samsung had all the catch up channels.
I eventually bought a talktalk box from Ebay for £25 and it does everything I want.
I also have a recordable talktalk box for the main TV and record programs that I would like to see. I don't watch much TV but when I want to, there is always something worthwhile to watch either on catch up or recorded.
good luck with the hunt

hi, did you use the talktalk box with a "non-smart" tv?
Hi sorry for the delay.
Yes I use the talktalk box with a non smart, big fat old fashioned tv.
I was going to replace my tv to go 'smart'. However, I decided to go the non smart tv route with a Talktalk box as none of the smart TV's had all the apps on that I wanted. ( might be different now)
The talktalk box came before I chose a new tv and it worked with my old crt tv so that's how I left it.
Really happy with my choice. I paid £25 on Ebay for a non recordable box and 2 home plugs.( I didn't need the home plugs and sold them on for £24!)
I have a recordable Talktalk box on the main Tv so just needed something to watch when football is on.
If I was starting out I would go for a recordable 'box' with catch up TV apps on it.
Talktalk ones are quite slow to boot up but there seem to be very reasonably priced .
I played about with the searches on Ebay to get a good price ie
TalkTalk, Talk Talk , Youview, You view ........in different combinations.
