I was advised to get Windows Live Mail to use with my BTwebmail as I was having problems reading the new BTwebmail.
And to cut a long story short.......
Unfortunately, I downloaded an old version 2009? automatically instead of manually setting up Windows Live Mail 2012. The 2009 version seems unalterable & set to POP3 whereas I need IMAP.
The result is my emails are disappearing from BT webmail (the server I believe) each time I look at the 2009 version of Live Mail!
My questions please,
From where can I SAFELY download Windows LiveMail 2012 (sites I've seen it on all look a bit dodgy and the Windows site was the one who supplied the old version)
Can I set 2012 version up before I delete 2009 and will I be able to transfer all my emails over safely I can't afford to lose them.
If you've read this far you will realise I'm not in the least bit techy minded so any baby steps advice would be very welcome please.

First of all, change the settings so your emails aren't getting deleted from the server...

(I could do a whinge about how you would be far better off without BT or Windows LiveMail - or are you stuck/attached to them?)0 -
It's here.....but....which version of Windows are you running?0

Thank you Armorica I'm stuck with BT I'm afraid - I must say after the past few days very reluctantly!! The Windows Live Mail was suggested to me as a useful addition/alternative but At this stage I'm open to suggestions

Thank you NiftyDigits It's Windows XP.
Thank you for the link I'd seen it but for some reason when I tried to use it my security suggested it might not be safe & I got cold feet!....told you I was scared!
I've now found the 'leave a copy on the server' & ticked it in the old 2009 version & will see what happens to emails received over night I will have another go at downloading the 2012 version tomorrow unless better alternatives are suggested on here.
Thank you both for your advice so far. I'm sorry to go but I'm exhausted .........0 -
https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird/ Thunderbird is a popular and friendly email client
Unless you need access to emails offline, then reading your emails through Gmail may be easier. Sign-up to Gmail, then set up collection from BT's servers. Very good at dealing with spam and very easy to search.
https://community.bt.com/t5/Email/Transferring-emails-from-BT-to-Gmail/td-p/975006 is from those undertaking a similar move
Ticking the leave on server should buy you time to sort out what's best for you in less of a panic!0 -

Windows Essentials 2012 system requirements
Windows Essentials 2012 requires the following:
Operating system: 32- or 64-bit version of Windows 7, or 32- or 64-bit version of Windows 8, or Windows Server 2008 R2.0 -
Thank you again both :-)
I'm sorry I've no idea about the sequence of operating systems. Am I correct to assume that Windows probably loaded the 2009 version because my operating system is too old for the latest version? Which make me wonder about getting a new PC.0 -

Yes.
What PC are you running now? Does it have a brand name and model number?0 -
Thank you again NiftyDigits
It's an ASUS and whilst fretting about trying to save emails I noticed that my PC must be a 2009 one, which sort of explains things. I think I'll pop into my local computer shop next time I'm in town with a view to treating myself to an early Christmas present.0 -
Take someone with you who knows about PC technology, and more importantly knows how to stop you being fleeced by the upselling that goes on in such shops.
(I'm presuming you're meaning PC World).0
