Thank you again NiftyDigits
It's an ASUS and whilst fretting about trying to save emails I noticed that my PC must be a 2009 one, which sort of explains things. I think I'll pop into my local computer shop next time I'm in town with a view to treating myself to an early Christmas present.
You missed the model number.
A computer is not limited to 2009. You can update the software.
My PC is from 2007 and can run the latest of everything.
Full model number.0 -
+1 for Thunderbird as an easy equivalent to Windows Mail - do you really need a new PC just for email?
I, like many others are running much older PCs with no issues.0 -
Nifty Digits - sorry I can't see a model number on it.
Bod1467 - Not going to PC World but a little local shop that I trust. If they can upgrade it I'm sure they will do it for me - I just wish they could offer advice surgeries so I could learn & do more for myself.
flashg67 - probably not! I do use it for other stuff it just seemed that the age of the PC (and user!) were conspiring against me for a very frustrating few days.
I am endlessly grateful for the advice I've had on here THANK YOU one & all.0 -

If your PC was new in 2009, then it wouldn't have XP on it, since Vista was released in 2006. So I'm guessing it was a refurb or shop-build?
No need to buy a new PC when it may be capable of running W7.No free lunch, and no free laptop

That is what you will be doing here. But firstly we have to discover exactly what it is that you have now.
Install and open CCleaner
Across the top of the interface will be written the basic spec of your computer. Write down what is written there.
If it looks upgradeable, I'll guide you through how to do it yourself.0
