Please Help. About to be fired in 3 weeks!

Hello people

Not really sure if this post is in the correct place, bit I really don't know who to talk to about this issue.
In a nutshell ;

I've started a new job, which I'm good at and I love, at the start of August this year. It's with a major security company, and as part of their screening, new employees must get written references completed within 12 weeks of employment commencing.

The problem is, one of my old employers from 3 years ago is refusing/dallying/wasting time as a pose to confirming I was there.

As it stands, I will be suspended then dismissed in 3 weeks if they do not conform to my new employer that I was there. Their silliness is going to cost me my livelihood!

I've rang my old employer numerous times and they claim they have not received any paperwork or emails from the screening department, which have been sent numerous times.

I've made it quite 100% clear to them, that I WILL lose my job if they do not confirm my presence there.

Not really sure how to approach this, or if there's anything I can do. It just seems extremely unfair and I'm very afraid and worried that I will be out of work!

Is there anyone with any advice or who could possibly advise me??

Many thanks

Can you get a reference from another previous employer instead? Or maybe they would accept a personal reference from someone in a respected position who knows you well e.g. Doctor, judge etc. or if it's just a case of confirming you were employed there then have you got your old contract, p60s or payslips as evidence?
  • Hi
No I'm afraid it's just that specific job they need a written reference from. They've already had two character references from me, and I don't have any paperwork etc.
The only constellation is that according to my HR advisor, they are liable if they cause me to lose my job.

Really wanted the job though :(

Not sure how your previous employer would be in any way liable for you losing your job.

Some jobs need continuous references going back X number of years with no gaps where security is a concern,

If it can be proved that the previous employer refused to give a reference out of malice there may be grounds to claim damages.

It could be incompetence by the screening department... are the questions confidential (not the answers) and is the old employer close by. I am wondering if you could be given a copy of the reference request and carry it over to your old HR yourself.

If I was an employer I wouldn't dream of taking anyone on my payroll without getting full references from their previous employers.

I cant understand employers doing it to be honest..... If they were thieves, they could empty the company bank account before a reference came back.... sheer madness
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

  • Can your new employer call? (Or is that what has happened - you are sure they've got the right details?)

And what size is your old employer?

(And have you considering mentioning something legal sounding or asking for a fax number or sending via registered post?)

I agree with picking up hardcopies of letters and emails from the new company and taking them over the old company yourself.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

Most employers wont provide character references anymore as it could lead to grievances or accusations of slander, or some other B.S.

Most employers now only provide confirmation of persons start / finish dates and possibly any disciplinarians still on record.
