Unexpected PPI...any ideas?

Hello chaps,
I wonder if anyone here can help.
Got home from work today and my other half has received a letter from MBNA- basically it says that following on from his complaint last year re misold ppi which was declined, they've reinvestigated and will be sending him a cheque for just over a grand within 28 days. This letter was accompanied by a pamphlet from the financial ombudsman service, should we wish to complain.
Now, this sounds great. Except that he doesn't remember having an account with mbna and certainly insists he's never put in any claim or complaint about ppi (though he's not so hot on financial matters, but is improving lol)
Has anyone else experienced this? Obviously I would LOVE this to be real but it seems too good to be true somehow...

While it's certainly true that Banks have re-opened complaints which were previously declined, the fact that your partner has no memory of an MBNA account nor of making any complaint a year ago seems very suspicious to me.Dormouse1940 wrote: »he doesn't remember having an account with mbna and certainly insists he's never put in any claim or complaint about ppi
Did the letter give any other instruction? Under no circumstances should you be required to pay anything upfront, for example.
Is it at all possible that the Bank have sent the letter to the wrong recipient?
The only way to be sure, of course, is to contact the Bank and ask them. Be sure to use the contact details given on their official website rather than any from the letter you have received (unless they are the same).0 -
That was my concern... he has had loans in the past so just maybe it's related to one of them but I'm really not sure.
The letter doesn't say we need to do anything (except to contact the FOS if we're not happy) but that we should get a cheque within a month.
I had a quick google of the contact number they provided and it seems to check out.
What would you lot do- sit back and wait to see if a cheque arrives? :SLiving thriftily

If the contact details "check out" as being the Bank and the letter is correctly addressed to your partner then it would seem to be a legitimate payment coming your way.Dormouse1940 wrote: »What would you lot do- sit back and wait to see if a cheque arrives? :S
Seems incredible that anyone would forget making a complaint only a year ago...0 -

I know. I think my biggest problem with this whole thing is that it highlights just how bloody useless Himself has been in the past with all matters financial.
Things have been improving on that front though- I've been training him up and will have him a MSE convert! lol :rotfl:

Ring them up, double check it - if it's not intended for you and you cash it, you'll only end up having to pay it back, if it is, great news for you, enjoy
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
