    I understand,

there are carpets, sofa, washing machine, dryer, etc etc which probably adds up to 6k.
The other thing to remember is that small bits and pieces quickly add up - especially on a new for old basis. As you have to include the cost of contents whether you'd actually care about replacing them or not, that means factoring in the cost of replacing all the old clothes at the back of the wardrobe, all the DVDs that you don't watch anymore and all the junk in the loft with equivalent new stuff. That's likely to be more than you think - and something which catches a lot of people out.

OP you need to include everything in your cover as other have said like beds, other bedroom furniture even down to clothes, cd's & dvds and your daughters toys

Basically anything you would take with you if your were to leave/ move house

I think you need to do an inventory of your house and you'll realise how under insured you are. Direct line have a really helpful tool on their website that lists each room individually and gives you an idea of what you need to be thinking about

  • Yes, it was my fault. They ask you to put the total amount of items down in your policy and notify them of any change.

When I took the policy out I must have had no more than 20k but as the years have built up I have obviously purchased the two laptops, and my wife moved in and of course my new tv.

    Laptop) 2.5k
    Laptop 2) 1.5k
    TV) 1.5k
    Wife Jewelry) 3k

which is 8.5k since 2003 before that my policy was 20k so I should have bumped it up to 30k :( Heart stopping, sinking feeling.

Just be completely honest with the OP that's all you can do.

Use this time now to go through everything with a fine tooth comb so you can get it right for your needs. As I said there is a great tool on Direct Line it made me realise i needed to increase mine from 50K to around 90K by the time i had finished

  • What is worrying is if they turn around and say we won't give you a penny. I have read stories online where people are under insured and they get nothing. It may be better to tell the insurance company that we found items just so we get something. This is my family and we can't afford to start from nothing over a technicality.

Unless there is more to this than you have said, everyone has pointed out what may happen if you are underinsured.

No-one has suggested your claims will be refused completely!

The other thing to think about (for the future, not now) is that if you've been with the same insurer for several years there's a very high probability that you will be paying more than you need to for your cover. You really need to get into the habit of checking whether you can get better/cheaper cover every time you get a renewal notice.

Don't do that OP you'll make things a thousand times worst by lying then they really can turn round and pay you nothing if they think it's a dodgy claim.

Lying is never better. You are where you are. Don't make it worse.
