Vent - CEX

On the 13/07/2014 I placed an order for some memory from CEX (2x8GB DDR3).

The items arrived a few days later separately - one was fine, the other was registered server memory and doesn't work in a desktop PC (same item ordered and listed under the "desktop memory" category).

They asked me to return it and just under a month later, another replacement stick arrived. This time, it was faulty (tried in multiple PC's), and they asked me to return it again.

On the 30/08/2014 the second replacement turned up, tested it - faulty again. Pretty annoyed at this point - as it'd been over six weeks since my order. Asked to return the item again - but still no replacement after three weeks.

To make up for the inconvenience, they offered me a £5 goodwill voucher. I used this to buy some more memory (2x4GB DDR3). Order arrived, containing 1x4GB DDR3 & 1x2GB DDR2 stick. The order email says "All items are fully tested" and yet DDR2 doesn't even fit in a DDR3 socket, let alone work, so I'm not sure how they managed that!

So, 2 months later I've got half my items, 2/6 arrive right first time, 2/6 arrive incorrect and 2/6 arrive faulty. Not great odds...

Not surprised to be honest, they literally don't know squat about how to handle computing components correctly let alone how to test them properly. I remember when I first went into a Cex to buy a gfx card, all was going well til the guy just picked it up by the pci-e connector(!), chucked it into a plastic carrier bag and started processing the sale, needless to say I told him why I didn't want it anymore and that the guy was a complete moron to handle ESD sensitive components that way.

As for testing, does anyone think they really properly test all the RAM, HDD's, GFX cards, Processsors etc properly? Same for the phones, consoles etc... Can you see them having that many testing and diagnostic machines available for such a broad range of component and equipment configurations? Nah think I'll stick to reputable outlets that have trained and qualified staff, dont mind buying the odd game from there so long as I can examine the disc and see it working properly first but hardware? Never.
  • So after getting multiple wrong and faulty memory modules from CEX.. thus showing they sell crap memory.. they give you a £5 goodwill voucher and you spend it on.. memory.

Good point. He should get some more memory.
  • I traded in a 2GB hard drive for an 4GB one many years ago... Yes GB not TB :)

Usually their prices are mad but this upgrade turned out much cheaper than buying a 4GB drive and selling mine.

I took it on and they surfaced scanned it. I went back and he said no problem your drive tested fine and then dropped it onto the counter.
The guy at the computer who i presumed did the testing muttered "its probably not fine now".
I dont think he heard him. 1st thing i did with the new drive was run a stress test and surface scan just in case.

Maybe he needed to purchase more memory with the 5 pound goodwill because he forgot about the previous memories

My top tip - Crucial or Kingston. Costs a little more but you know it's going to be good!

Update - this is still going on :(

On the 7th of October another replacement arrives, but again it's incorrect (server not desktop memory).

I tell them that "enough if enough" and they say they'll sort it out. I was offered a £20 goodwill, but they refused to issue it in any form other than CeX vouchers, which I refuse (hopefully for obvious reasons!).

On the 20th of October I send a letter to head office detailing my problem, and it's signed for (with the name "CEX") on 22nd of October.

On the 1st of November I've still heard nothing so I post on their Facebook page - they claim they haven't received the letter. I reply with the tracking information. No reply. I reply again asking if they've found it yet... no reply.

On the 7th of November I send another letter, this time addressed to the Commercial Director (David Butler). This time it actually gets received, but just by someone in customer services.

On the 17th of November I received a CEX exchange voucher as a refund for the memory I returned. I email asking for this in some other form, and am sent a PayPal payment (not a refund!) which means I end up getting charged fees to receive the payment. I email to ask what's going on and get told that the fees are not covered by CEX!

    Absolute jokers.

If anyone has any suggestions on what to do next I'm all ears - the social media team don't actually reply to me, letters get lost or ignored, and theres no phone number to contact their customer service on. The only options I've got left are to keep calling someone at their head office (I've got a phone number but probably not the best one) until it gets sorted out or look at going down the legal route.
