Do you use stage remote to stream ? If not disable it. You say it's unusable online , have you run a speed check on say http://speedtest.net/.

You didn't reply to the above.

If you click on the Speedtest link and then click on 'Begin Test'

When the test finishes you will then be able to see from the 'Download Speed' result at the top of the screen if you have a problem with your internet connection.

Anything less than 2.0Mbps means you have a slow connection.

    Thanks for all the replies.
I've run the Malware scan and it found nothing.
    The service tag is 4JP6LT1

Its most unusual for a scan to find nothing on its first run.

I often use both MalwareBytes AND Glary utilities as one of the first things to try when diagnosing slow machines along with defragmenting the hard disk.

If its only when online then it might be that something is consuming the bandwidth such as a system update.
If you view Windows update then does it say there are downloads in progress or maybe even waiting to be installed (which could mean they have recently been downloaded)

However, I have just read the post that mentions the processor benchmark speed of 445. I have 12 year old Windows XP machines with benchmark ratings around that figure.

Uninstall McAfee if it's still on the machine, that'll probably solve a lot of slow problems. install Microsoft Security Essentials instead of it.

Uninstall all the toolbars your machine might have on it (Ask, Bing, Google, Yahoo, AVG, etc etc)

You might feel brave and just wipe and restore to factory settings, back up all your files first though,

Restoring to Factory Settings will just reinstall the carp that you are suggesting to remove.
The machine needs as much help as it can get.

Sorry, I did run it, just forgot to update here. Download speed is 6.72 mbps. Upload speed is 0.85 mbps.
  • Have read all the replies. Is it fair to say then that my ex bought me a c**p machine? :rotfl:

Erm.... let's just say that he didn't understand the spec.

With a clean install of Windows 7, it will be ok. It shouldn't be as bad as you describe, so perhaps you do have other issues.
For how long has it been this way?

Yep you're right, I should have repeated my first instructions after the 'do a restore.....'

That's why we rely on you to answer these questions :D
