Additional and shared paternity...?

Hello all,
My partner and I are expecting our second child in November this year (2014). I have decided I would like to take some time off and help raise our new baby. Now my partner has agreed she will take the first 8 months and I will take the remaining 4. As our baby is due before the 5th April 2015, we are not in time to benefit from the new shared paternity leave scheme. However, I have also seen about the additional paternity leave, which says if you are eligible, you are entitled to statutory paternity pay as long as the mother is back in work. So essentially I would be getting the same deal...?
From what I can see the only difference is that you can now take the leave in blocks?
Any light on this would be much appreciated. I also plan on asking my company to review it's policy on paternity pay as it seems slightly unfair the first 12 weeks of maternity leave is at 90% pay, but paternity leave is just statutory pay. Any thoughts on this would also be appreciated.
Regards,
Simon.
