Hours at work to be increased? Will this effect tax credits

Hi there,
We are a couple with 2 children, 1 of which is a new born baby?

The question is that the company I work for is stating that out hours will be going up to 30 hours per week instead of currently 24 hours?

My partner does not work and I am on the National Min Wage:

What I am concerned about is will my working tax credits go up or down? as I was told if you work less than 24 hours you don't get working tax credits? is this true ?

Or would I be best staying at 24 hours, so basically how do I get the maximum working tax credits.

I am currently looking for a full time job and my partner will also be doing this once baby has grown?

Your help is much appreciated.

I have already read the information from HMC but I cannot seem to work out if we will be better off or worse off?

Many thannks

  • 2013/2014 was £7200
but they have stated on new form I will be earning 7,380 ? when I haven't even told them about this ?

I obviously know I will be better off wages wise but would my tax credits go up ?

we don't get housing benefit or council tax benefit

my father is helping out with the mortgage but as you can imaging general day to day costs is becoming more of a nightmare

    thanks
  • until they change my hours then it would be 7200 per year before tax
  • actually it will be 8,112 before tax
  • that figure was before, so based on the min wage I would presume 10,140?

    thanks
  • ok, right get it?

I will need to dig out the forms and respond later.
Many thanks for your help on this, much appreciated?

    Will forward on soon.

    Regards
    Simon

So you would like to know how to do the minimum work possible to continue taking the maximum amount of handouts possible from the people who do work to support themselves as well as you?

Just one comment. Decide to minimise effort in exchange for maximising benefits and one day your children will grow up and leave home, your tax credit gravy train will dry up, and you'll be stuffed.

Or take this opportunity to up your hours as a step towards putting your future in your own hands - your total income may not rise at the moment, but the part of it you actually earn will, and in the long run that counts for a lot.

While I normally would fully agree with your viewpoint in general , the OP has said he is looking for full time work and his wife will also be looking for some work hours at a later date.

So I felt he was just concerned for the present time particularly on the effect this could have on being able to meet his mortgage repayments. Which is perhaps understandable if you don't know how this tax credits system works. Hope I'm not wrong.
  • You may be entitled to some council tax support, go to you councils website & apply. Most have a calculator & on line applic these days. Oh the nmw goes upto £6.50 next week.

What people say on the Bennies Board, and what they actually do is akin to Chalk & Cheese lovey.

I do believe they call it "lip service".
