Credit rating / Bank account issues

Hi,

I am having some issues which I need some urgent help with so I appreciate you all reading this.

I am moving in with my partner and we decided to set up a joint account for bills, separate current accounts and a savings account. We went to the local TSB and were both declined for any kind of account.

My partner was previously bankrupt so I understand her being declined but why would I be? The lady at the bank said to check a website like Equifax and see if anything flags up. My credit score (for what it's worth) is excellent. The only anomaly I could see was that the section regarding the electoral roll which had a red flag on it but no explanation. It seems to make no sense and has some weird details.

I have been at this address since I was about 14 and I am 33 now. It is saying in the electoral roll section that I have only been here a year but then goes on to contradict itself by saying this.

Surname
Forename

Date of

Electoral Roll
Birth

Ronald

Rowland

98-99

I contacted the electoral roll office who told me I have been registered since December 2009 which contradicts all of the above. Also you can see above, the middle entry has the wrong forename and the bottom entry has "yes" under restricted use. Also my D.O.B is only mentioned once.

Is this why I can't open a bank account? I opened one when I was in my teens with no issues and I currently have a credit card and have paid back a few personal loans over the years so this is very strange.

My father was bankrupt several years ago. Could I be getting confused with him somewhere? I am guessing that this will affect me if I ever want a loan from anywhere or a different credit card etc so I need to get it fixed.

It doesn't mention my dad anywhere in the credit report and the only thing that is flagged up is the electoral roll section saying I have only been at my address for a year and the mystery "Rowland"

I would be very grateful for any help

Thanks
Ronnie

  • Did you only try to apply for joint accounts? If so, they may be rejecting the application because of your partners bankruptcy.
Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

ALWAYS HAVE A DIRECT DEBIT SET UP FOR THE MINIMUM PAYMENT ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU PLAN TO LOGIN AND PAY EACH MONTH.
  • We tried the joint account first and then accounts just for me and it still happened. What is also confusing is that my partner was rejected instantly with a credit check on their computer at the bank but it took ages for me, they were making phone calls too.
  • Still can't figure this out.

Have you got copies of your credit file from all 3 credit reference agencies?
Is there anything incorrect on any of them?

Does your partner show as a financial associate with any of the agencies?

I doubt the typo is preventing you being able to get a new bank account.

The DOB info is correct, it is only used to identify 17/18 year olds, after that it is not relevant.

It may be that by applying for the joint account first that even when you did the second application just after in just your name they are still considering you as financial associates.

Have you tried a different bank?

While I can see why people might want joint current accounts and a joint mortgage (I have both), I see no merit whatsoever in joint utility accounts. In fact, they are a positively bad idea.
  • I only have the Equifax report. I used up the free trial for Experian a while back. I still don't get why the electoral roll section flags up red and says "WARNING"

I contacted the electoral roll office and they have records saying I have been registered since 2009. The report does not show her as an associate. Could it be that particular bank that made us associates just on their own computer system? Haven't tried another bank because the idea of joining them was that they are the closest to where I live since my local branch of my current bank closed down.

It also says "You have been on living at your current address for less than 3 years" Which is not true. I've been here since I was about 14 and I am 33 now. I know banks/lenders want 3 years of address history but the report seems to contradict itself. there's electoral roll dates from 1999 yet it says I have only been here for less than 3 years.

I dunno what to do next.

If I was in your position I would spend the £2 to get a copy of your experian report, and get a free copy of your callcredit report from noddle and see what they both show.
