How to deal with shares when living abroad?

My husband lives half of his life outside UK. He own some shares and inherited some from his mother in UK. My father-in-law still lives in the same house and my husband always uses this address since he stayed with him every time he went to UK.
Last year, we stayed 6 months in UK and my husband bought and sold shares quite a lot. The share dealing companies always asked him to send his original passport, proof of address. It is really a headache.
Now, we are both residents in Spain. My husband sold BG shares and it is worth more than 8000 pounds. Equiniti hold the cheque and said my husband need to send his passport and proof of address again before they sent out the cheque.
Can anybody advise why they kept asking the proof of the address each time and how can my husband changed his address to Spain?
Is a Spanish water or electricity bill acceptable in UK if it is in Spanish??
I am from Asian and just do not understand why the address in UK is so important?? In China, the most important document is the ID card and everybody in Spain has a DNI or NIE number, same all your life.

Yes. He has LLoyds bank account. Every time he sold shares, he usually got a cheque sent to his father's house and his father will deposit it into his bank account.
He began to invest more than 25 years ago and always have paper share certificates and does not buy/sell online.

Then it's time he did convert to an online account. In his circumstances, it will make things a great deal simpler, as he won't need to cash cheques, post share certificates etc. And it will be a great deal cheaper, too.sandraspain wrote: »He began to invest more than 25 years ago and always have paper share certificates and does not buy/sell online.0 -

i completely agree - with all due respect, certificates are a thing of the past - online nominee accounts make life so much simpler and will easily overcome your location based issues.0 -
Oh, and that way he won't need to make an international phone call to buy or sell shares, either......0
