Car Insurance for the old car till i sell them?

I currently have a 10 year old car which I will be selling soon. I am going to buy a new car this weekend.

I am planning to change my old car's insurance to the new car. I can do this online using the insurance provider's website free of charge.

This effectively means I am changing my current insurance to the new car.

Question i have is can i keep the old car without insurance till I sell it. I am hoping to sell it within a weeks time. or is there other options available? If i buy a new insurance and cancel my old insurance i will have to pay a early closing fee.

Any ideas?

2) Add the vehicle back to the existing policy as a temporary additional vehicle
3) Buy an annual policy with 0 NCD that has low cancellation charges
4) SORN the vehicle and dont insure it

As long as you keep it off the road you can leave it uninsured for a week (or longer).


When you have an uninsured (non SORN) vehicle that flags up, you first get a reminder letter, and only if you ignore this do you end up being penalised.

Many thanks for your response. Any idea where i can find cheap temporary car insurance( probably for 30 days )? I checked with my current provider and they confirmed that they cant provide temporary insurance on my old car.

Why do you want to insure it? what is it worth? Theft and Fire is all you will be covering for.

Your own insurer will probably be the cheapest option to cover the overlap (up to about a month or 2). I think mine was in the region of £15/week.

Temporary insurance is much more expensive.

Cheap and temp dont go together unfortunately when it comes to car insurance, mainly due the stupidly high marketing costs irrespective of the duration of the policy.

Google temporary car insurance and you will get a host of insurers. Even the aggregators like confused.com will do some quotes (comparison)

30 days may cost you almost as much as a years policy. Sell teh car quickly and save yourself some money maybe?

Dont forget you have zero no claims for the old car.

When the insurance expires you should SORN it and return the tax disc for a refund. Makes selling it harder though.

Although the new rules when you sell it the tax cannot be transferred anyway.
