Please provide any evidence to support the above as its a new one on me and we would total loss a vehicle and load it to MIAFTR even if we hadnt agreed the settlement value with the TP yet but it was a clear cut total loss and we were liable.

It's been a number of years but I don't recall actually loading anything onto MIAFTR. When a car was declared a total loss, I changed a MIAFTR field to 'Y'.

This would only apply to the insured vehicle as the third party vehicle details weren't held the same way.

We had admin staff that did the actual loading. We'd fill in the total loss form and pass it to them and we then get a screenshot back. If we ran out of forms we'd borrow them from the guys in first party claims. I dont know if they had a way to do it directly in the system but they certainly had paper forms as a backup if they did.

I didnt deal with first party damage but when they closed their file and sent it to us to do any recovery possible then it had the same MIAFTR screenshots in it. Now I dont think I ever compared the two with a fine tooth comb to see if they were being entered the same but I cannot recall anything ever jumping out at me as being different between first and third party total loss loadings.

Whilst I wont every claim to be a legal eagle I cant think off hand why we wouldnt be supposed to say that we are settling a claim and either due to safety or cost have written off the car.
