Flooring for kitchen-diner.

We need to replace flooring in a house we have just bought. At present the kitchen has vino lay, dining end has carpet tiles.
The two halves are separated by an archway, and the lay out suits us well, but the two halves are quite distinct.
Kitchen has cabinets which are light oak laminated.
Our dining furniture is a lot darker.
We can't decide whether to try to link the two ends by a common flooring, and if so what? Or have two separate floor coverings.
My preference would be for light coloured tiles throughout, but DH does not want tiles in the dining area.
What have you done in similar situations?

We have decided on light tiles in both kitchen and dining area. Didn't want carpet in the dining area as it is open in case of spills etc!0

Have you chosen them yet? What make, material?0

We've gone for porcelain tiles in an off white/ivory (Porcelanosa). My cupboards are ivory gloss and my work surface and dining table are a darkish oak. Hope that helps0

Actually they might be ceramic! I think it's the wall tiles that are porcelain!0 -
We have light coloured ceramic tiles in our kitchen/diner/sitting room. We have animals and live in the country so tiles were really the only way to go. Admittedly they are cold under foot in the winter, but I just wear slippers. Tiles are much more convenient, easy to keep clean and should last a good few years and I wouldn't really have liked anyhting else. However it's a nightmare if you drop a full jar of jam onto them, the mess is shocking!0
