PPI refunds and IVA

We have been in an IVA since Jan 2014. We recently applied for a PPI claim and received 2 payments both of which went directly to the IVA company. Will these payment help to pay off the original agreed IVA total which was around £6000 or will these be considered as 'windfalls' and be extra payments towards the total amount we owed to our creditor's originally?
I'm confused! The company's adviser said once the IVA was arranged we only owed around £6000 and if we knew anybody who could lend us that money we could just pay them the monthly fee instead
