Weevils?

I have just gone to fill my bread flour jar and I opened a pack and it was crawling:eek::eek: all 6 packs were the same.

I have bleached the cupboard out. I have a 15+ packs of bread mix in plastic packaging are they likely to have infected those too? Also do they spread? My pantry is on the other wall to my baking drawer is that going to be infested too? Do I need to put everything in to glass jars? What about the clip and lock would that work?

I am completely freaked out now:eek:

  • After having an infestation a while back, I put everything in packets into jars or click and lock containers. As advised on the link given, I freeze flour for 4 days every time I buy it, and touch wood, all has been good.
I can't say whether the weevils have travelled or not, you'll just have to check it out. I do know that they can get into cardboard and through plastic, as I found out with a boxed packet of oatcakes. I threw everything out in that cupboard, and luckily, it was only confined to the one. It took me days to get the cupboard totally cleaned out of the little beggars. Yeugh!
  • I always freeze my flour as well because the thought of weevils horrifies me, and I do know they are difficult to be rid of.

I am sure the tip for freezing was on MSE because I didn't know about it until I joined. It sounds as though you are doing everything you can, but do keep checking for your own peace of mind.

  • They are horrid, aren't they? We have had them now about 5 times. I'm convinced they are indestructible, as we've been freezing literally every grain product we buy. And we keep everything in sealed containers :-/

Apparently (saw it on TV) what they hate is a dry atmosphere so when I got them once I dried all the nooks and crevices (ie shelf edges and corners) with a hairdryer. This is supposed to dehydrate and kill them. I only had the one infestation.

  • I also freeze my flour for 48 hours. I then keep it in a sealed container in my fridge. Haven't had any weevils since.
