which brand engine oil for honda civic
hi
similar to my post earleir about gearbox oil, i would appreciate some help with engine oil for my 2002, manual honda civic (1.4 litre, petrol, SE trim). i do about 7/8000 miles per year mainly city driving.
having spoken with honda dealership i was told that the recommended oil is 10W40 however as i understand 5W40 will also work (am i right?)
is there a brand that is recommended? normally i get oil provided by local garage but now i am just thinking of maybe putting in little bit extra money to get better oil as i want to get 2/3 more years out of the car now than i was planning last year.
so is there any particular brand that is recommended or best avoided?

as with gearbox oil, the selection criteria should be:
1. grade
2. type (i.e. mineral / semi-synthetic / full synthetic
3. brand
I'd use a fully synth 10/40 but as you don't do a big mileage, I'd go for a cheapish brand and ensure it's changed annually. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
Just go on Euro car parts, enter your reg number and it will display a list of suitable oils. Doing 7-8k miles/year stop/start short journey city driving on a 10 year plus car, it may be better to change the oil every 6 months. The Honda's are known to sip oil so keep an eye on the oil level0

thanks. i was told that difference between 5W and 10W oil is thickness (5W is thinner to help in low temperature) but i also read somewhere that thinner oil on old car can lead to more oil leaks (my car doesnt have a known oil leak but just trying to be cautious). any truth in these?
thing with the search engines like one on eurcarpart is they give different answers. for example eurocarpart says i can use anything from 0W30 to 15W40. which to a car novice like me sounds confusing....0 -
If you still have the service book, have a look in there. When my car is serviced the dealer writes the engine oil grade next to the mileage.0

Plenty of options at 10/40. (Semi-synth?)
I usually stick to Castrol GTX or Magnatec but I've also used ECP own brand (Triple QX) as well as Halfords' own brand. Never had any issues.
For some reason I still finding myself steering away from supermarket branded oil.0 -
using 5w40 should be fine. You could even use 0w30. If you are only going to change once a year use fully synthetic. Here is a good one:

Did you see my thread on oil extractors? You can get one for around £50 and do the oil changes yourself and save money otherwise spent on the local mechanic0 -
How come you would only go to Honda for gearbox oil, but the engine oil you don't mind going elsewhere?
For any normal kind of engine, can't go too wrong with 5w40 semi.0 -

If u look on the thread abt gearbox u will see its proving quite difficult to definitely confirm the spec of gearbox oil for Honda. He certainly playing safe. Also engine oil I need 5 litres or so and Honda only do 1 litre bottles at £14 plus vat per bottle. So quite expensive.0 -

When eurocarparts have an offer on you can get 5 litres of fully synthetic delivered for about a tenner.
I have one spare in my shed.
£19 at moment, must be the one day of the year they haven't got some sort of sale on...0
