Trafford NtO but where was ticket?

Just received an Notice to Owner for parking fine 2 months ago. My wife had car on the day and went to hair dressers and bought ticket (its 10p) and category denies any knowledge of any ticket . The Trafford and letter says 'the person appearing to be in charge of the vehicle was served with a penalty charge notice which allowed 14 days for payment of a 50% penalty charge.
As I have a) no ticket, and b) and adamant wife who insisted she always buys ticket in the area in question I am tempted to challenge this - not sure which grounds 'procedural impropriety' or 'invalid order'.
Any help/guidance... likely this will cost me more ie 75£ instead of 50 if I eventually lose but its super frustrating thinking to pay out 50£ of hard earned cash w/o anything other than this letter.
Help....

As we tend to major on private parking tickets here, PePiPoo will be your best bet for council tickets (which I assume this one is). Here's your link:
http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?act=SF&s=&f=30
Have a read through some of the other threads there before you post your own to get the hang of what information they need from you in your opening post - but as a minimum you will need photos/scans of all correspondence you've received from the council (both sides, if appropriate).
PePiPoo has an excellent success record in dealing with council tickets.
If it isn't a council issued ticket come back with the name of the issuing body please.
HTHPlease note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .
I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.
