T-Mobile - Argh

Husband had a contract Internet "dongle" for a while a few years back. He didn't cancel it when he stopped using it (I know) and they obviously continued to take the money. During an overhaul of our outgoings he noticed this and called T-Mobile who assured him it was cancelled. He didn't have the number but this is the only thing he has ever had from them. So he duly cancelled the direct debit. He's now had a letter asking for payment of this contract that was allegedly cancelled. Calling them tomorrow but frustrated that he was told one thing on the phone and another in writing.

  • Did they confirm there were no more payments? Did he get a letter confirming it all, or send one? It's best to have such confirmations in writing.

Contact them and ask for a letter detailing cancellation terms and confirmation of the cancellation, then settle the debt.

Could there have been some time left on the contract? Cancelling the service wouldn't necessarily cancel the contract.
  • The contract has been finished for years. He took it out around 4 or 5 years ago so way out of contract. He called with me in the room and was told that the contract was cancelled with no mention of anything left to pay.

He's contacting them tomorrow (working 8-8 today and won't get a chance).

Surely you mean "the minimum term of the contract has been finished for years".

Most contracts of this type continue beyond the initial minimum fixed term if you do nothing to terminate them... just like mobile phone contracts.

If he didn't specifically terminate the contract, then your husband owes the money whether he used the service or not.
  • We know that and are probably going to have to pay the extra that they're asking for. It was the fact that the woman on the phone had said that the account had already been cancelled when obviously it hadn't
