Primary school uniform

  • Hi,

Well I managed to see the head today, just to have a light hearted chat rather than to complain. I was hoping to speak the class teacher but she wasn't in the yard. Anyway, the head suggested, as a few others have, that I get something out of lost property. She seems to think some of my son's jumpers might be in there!

However, she wouldn't pass this onto my son, so I have done this tonight and we will go in first thing tomorrow to find one which fits. I'll then bring it home and wash it. Even better if we find some which are ours.

I haven't got one on order as I was waiting until pay day which is Friday. Also, the school has never had a compulsory school uniform and my middle son wore the exact same tops that my younger one is now not allowed to have. This change has not been communicated to the parents. But I'm not going to cause a fuss as I love the school. Also, my son came out with his confiscated top tonight.

Anyway, I think the school have a few more important problems than what my son wears as it was chaotic when they left the after school club last night as no adults were present and the children (some as young as 6) were unsupervised and playing in the staff car park. She thanked me for telling her about this and is going to look into it. Far more important than school uniform. :)

This change has not been communicated to the parents.

I find this very hard to believe. Were there lots of other children not in the school uniform or had the other parents somehow heard about the changes?

If the school is really making changes to the rules, not informing parents and punishing children for not complying with the unknown rules, then something is very wrong with the school management.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I think what had upset me the most was the hoodie being confiscated. He's only 9, its not like he's in secondary school! Its been freezing up here today and my son looked really cold on the walk home from school.

I'm sure the school will try to accommodate you as you can't afford to buy a sweatshirt yet (probably got some lost property already).

I do find it hard to understand why you find it acceptable for a Primary age child to go to school without uniform but at secondary you sound as if it's OK.

Previous posters have explained that when you enrol your child at a school you sign up for the rules. It's not necessary for you to physically sign an agreement. If you want a school that allows Disney hoodies then the current school is the wrong one for you.

I'm not surprised that the policy might have changed over the years. Schools are working hard to change the attitudes of pupils (and parents) and putting a strict uniform policy in place is an outward sign. It's been very common that when schools become academies (privatised) then one of the first things that happens is they change the uniform, often to a blazer/tie etc.
  • We're going shopping for school trousers this weekend.

Someone asked if the OP had checked everything fitted before the start of term. My DD (just started year 4) tried everything on over the summer, and they were fine. She wore dresses for the first couple of weeks back. This week it was cooler, so she put trousers and a polo shirt on - the trousers were cutting into her waist, and looking short.

Some mornings I think she looks bigger than the night before. In KS2 they seem to shoot up while you're not looking.
