Car ownership after losing husband

Hi, this is the first time I've posted to this site but I always use it for advise. I can't find an answer to my question though so I'm hoping someone can help.


I lost my too young husband very suddenly 15 months ago and I'm still dealing with the emotional and legal fall out. I wish it was compulsory to have a will as soon as you move out of your family home, then update it as life changes


My question relates to his car. We were married, he didn't have a will and he owned a car outright (no finance). Can anyone tell me who the ownership legally falls to immediately after, before DVLA etc. have been notified? The car has since been scrapped so it was never registered in my name with the DVLA (Although I wrote a letter with the V5, which the DVLA lost, along with his driving licence and the V5 to another vehicle although I hand delivered it to the branch and got a receipt :mad: but that's another story). I'm guessing ownership immediately fell to me, as spouse but I'd like to confirm this.

So sorry for your loss

When my husband died I send off the V5 to the DVLA with me as the new keeper. I rang the insurance and found I had 30 days to decide what to do, either sell the car and cancel and they would give me a full pro-rata refund for the remainder or start a new insurance in my name.
The car was worth about £1800. I did put this value on the probate form

ps - when going through his papers make a note of and keep every, even small, record of any account including adverts/ flyers or post which might come, etc. and follow them up.
My husband was good at keeping records but nearly 2 years after he died he received a letter from an insurance company about a new scheme. There was no mention of this company in any of his paperwork and no policy number on the letter. To be honest I thought it was just junk mail but I gave them a ring when a second one arrived a year later to tell them to take his name off their mailing list. The operator suggested I write in to check his details. Thank goodness I did as after a bit of legal paperwork I received a cheque for a very large amount (large to me) To this day I have no idea why he had this policy or what it was linked to. It wasn't a life insurance, I don't know what it was. Anyway it prompted me to contact every other company in his records and I found one with a smaller amount when they did a search.
He also had a Bradford and Bingley internet ISA account with just over £3,000 of which there was no record of this even though I had access to his internet. I found this because 'B&B' and a number was written in his address book. Stupidly I rang the number which was dead but it prompted me to ring them and it turned out it was his password in disguise.

You as widow automatically inherit all the personal effects of the deceased (including a normal car) unless a will says anything to the contrary
