Toys for indoor cat

Hello all

On Saturday I adopted a (second) cat from a rescue centre. She has to stay indoors for a couple of weeks, but I wouldn't be surprised if she turns out to be an indoor cat, as she seems perfectly happy in the bedroom and hasn't made any attempts to come downstairs or try and get out (unlike my first, who was pacing up and down and trying to get out of every window).

I've bought a catnip elephant, one of those feathery things on the end of a stick and some ping pong balls, which she doesn't seem the slightest bit interested in. She does however love the laser pen, but I am not going to be there all the time to play with that.

Just wondering if there are any toys recommended that she can play with when she is on her own? I feel so sorry for her just sitting there in the bedroom all by herself, but I can't force her to come out and have the run of the house if she doesn't want to.

My boy loves empty cardboard boxes. If she's happy enough though I'd just leave her to get on with things. She's probably still a bit overwhelmed at being in a home environment again after being in a centre.

The boxes are a good idea, thanks. My old cat used to love them.

She was fostered in a home, but she also had to have 5 weeks cage rest, not sure how long ago, so maybe she is not used to having a lot of space. The fosterer said she spent most of her time upstairs and had just started to come down every now and again.

I looked at those, they all seem to be catnip toys.
  • On a similar note to the cardboard boxes, my cat loves the paper bags you get from Primark. They are the perfect size for a cat and flop over forming a sort of papery cave he can peer out from. He's a simple sort.

I'd second this - with the paper handles removed (my cat ends up with it wrapped round his neck if I leave the handles on).

What about a treat dispenser in which you put her food in? Don't put it in the bowl. They scavenge throughout the day anyway so a treat dispenser would stimulate natural behaviour and give some exercise? :)

Thanks all. The Primark bag idea is a good one, although it means I will have to venture into that hellhole!

She doesn't seem to be a very 'playful' cat, the laser toy is the only thing that gets her moving! She had a very bad injury a while ago, although she is supposed to be fully recovered, so I wonder if that is affecting her at all.
