which laptop to buy in the USA

I'm going to the US next week, and since I need a new laptop, I thought I would get one over there.

I'm a bit confused as to the choice available, and was wondering if anyone can recommend either a model and/or a good place to buy it from?

From what I can see on the web, I can save myself around 30% on some models.

I'm looking to spend around $1,100 maximum. Just want something that is good for storing music/pictures, wifi and general home apps.

TIA.

I would start checking some reviews on US sites and compare with UK reviews.

I would aslo be going mad on price comparison sites so I knew who and where to buy from before you go. If you are clever you could have the deal done before you leave home, ready to collect.

As far as which one to get sorry I haven't a clue. But a decent battery is a must in my opinion. Check reviews; ask mates and I'm sure someone will be along here soon to piont you in the right direction.

One tip set a price limit otherwise you can just go nuts!! (Ooops you have a limit..lol)

Thanks for the tips. I've managed to find a Dell Inspiron 6000 model for a very special deal of $999. It comes with a 6 hour battery, big screen, 80GB hard drive, 512MB ram, and it's about 30% off compared to buying it in the UK.

I managed to find the deal by looking at "dell coupons" when searching on google. Those US sites love their coupons!

    Issues buying from the States:

They have a different keyboard to us.
You have to declare your laptop when you arrive into the UK (whether you really do is up to you).
Power supply (although that shouldn't be too much of an issue I think).
Warranty / guarantee - check you get a worldwide warranty / guarantee and for how long.
Dell as far as I know in the USA is mail order, so you will need a US address. Also the coupons are normally for US residents only. Its the same with most of these mail in rebates, you have to live in the states to use them.
