Website CoolBrands has announced its top 20 Cool Brands list for 2014.
Top of the list is Apple but should it be? Are there any others on the list that shouldn't be? Or any not there that should?
Plus Instagram's pushed Twitter out. Is it really cooler?

I'm suprized but only because I tend to think of the idea of having "cool" brands is something I'd pit at the teenage to early/mid 20's age group, once you get older than this, the idea of cool seems to be vastly traded in with "is it overpriced/(not worth it)", "does it do the job/(can I overlook everything and put price first)" and "at the end of the day does it really matter/(bigger things in life to worry about such as the mortgage/pension/job/etc)". Not to say these aren't issues the below 25 age group don't think about, but the idea of cool and self image matters a great deal more when your still learning about and building your personality. Once you have a strong sense of self, the idea of thinking about a brand being cool enough or not really doesn't matter as much- you've got nothing to prove to anyone any more.
With that said and the reason for mentioning it is that the list mentions few of the brands I'd associate with the teenage to 25 year age group I had in mind.
Brands like Abercrombie and Fitch, Facebook, Monster/Beats or Topshop are not on the list and that suprizes me.
I can't think who the group is aimed at- because brands such as Samsung, Lidl/Aldi or even magazines which people read are not mentioned- it's as if they've taken a different sector of society and asked them for one cool brand each, thus creating a very odd and random list. I don't know of anyone who looks to get a Rolex any more (not in the last 25 years at least) I'd also have thought brands such as Mac, Bobbi Brown, Molton Brown a few more designers (YSL, Prada, Mulberry, Johnathon Saunders, Henry Holland, Orla Kiely...) or Amazon would be on the top 20 list or even the odd coffee shop (any of them).
But then again, maybe I'm too past it to know what is cool, or to old to really care...!0 -
Perhaps we should do our own version - Cool MoneySaving Brands
Businesses such as Lidl, Aldi, Approved Foods are likely to appear in the Top 20. Any others? :beer:Could you do with a Money Makeover?

I think that the attitude most people have today, that these brands are already seen as "trendy" and not seen as brands people avoid. It's seen as the done thing now to shop at any of the above and if your only shopping at M&S for food this is now looked down on because people view it as not being savvy or in-the-know where as shopping at the mid-priced supermarkets (Tesco, Sainsburys, Co-op) is viewed as being poorer quality than Lidl and Aldi. People seem to not be afraid or ashamed of letting others know that they use any of the discounter stores in my experience, these brands are cool.
Being ripped off or seen as being ripped off is not something to be proud of, the trend now is to be savvy and being socially aware, financially and economically aware and in touch with the real world. Aldi, Lidl and so on are trendy, that they didn't make the "trendy brands" list I think speaks volumes about perhaps how out of touch the creators of the list are.0
