Top priority when buying a house

I don't consider location in the context of "where everyone wants to be" I consider it in the context of overall convenience for me, surrounding areas and how quiet it is etc.
A lot of areas which are considered very highly sought after, I have lived in and wouldn't consider moving there again!0 -

Best house in best street is always the best thing to buy BUT if you cannot afford that then what about best house in 2nd best street? Is that any worse than the 2nd best house in the best street if it falls much better within budget?
Not sure I agree with that - I've always heard that you should buy the worst house in the best street! Of course this presumes that there is scope to improve the house and that you're willing to do so. But it's definitely the best way to add value to your investment, if that's a consideration.
Of course it's a balancing act and depends on what will make you happy. But personally I think I'd go for a less good house in the best location over a better house in a not-so-good location. But what's a great location for one person may not be so for another - for example, we love our location - great transport links and close to a wonderful park - but we're on a pretty busy road, albeit set off with a large front garden and a secluded rear garden. It ticked our boxes and we love the house itself too - but may not be everyone's cup of tea.0 -

Structural condition of the house
Garage / good parking
Immediate surroundings - ie nothing rough looking nearby.
Location - remember that you may have to move and commute to work etc. Near family who can keep an eye on the place when you're away.
Neighbours - are they "stable" types or likely to move away? Who may replace them?0 -
For us, location was number 1. We wanted to be a short walk from a primary school and a shop, ideally on a bus route too. But we wanted to be in a village location within a 40 minute drive of my husbands work.
Secondly, we wanted a fair size garden that was private and not at all overlooked, as our last house was a nightmare (neighbours could stand in their garden and look in our kitchen window)
Also, off-street parking was a must for us.
We managed to get everything we wanted and more. However the house we went for was pretty basic and has no curb appeal whatsoever, but that can be changed and there is massive scope for extending the property and changing the layout to suit us.Value of prizes 2010 - 2017: £8374 Wins 2022: Magic set
