in Credit cards
I wonder if anyone in the financial industry can let me know about this?
I ordered a coat from M&S in store yesterday and paid with my M&S credit card, but this morning I had an email from them to say that the order was cancelled because the item is out of stock and they are sending me a cheque for the refund.
I phoned them to say that I don't want a cheque, as I haven't got time to queue up the bank and asked if they could just credit it back to my card. I was told that they couldn't do this because they don't hold my card details, as I paid in store not online. I don't believe this, as they must be able to void or refund payments even without having the details.
Anyway, the bottom line is, while they're faffing about sending me a cheque, which I then have to wait until I've got time to go to the bank to pay in, the payment they took on my card is accruing interest. Surely this goes against the financial or PCI rules?

One would hope that M&S credit card and M&S stores are not actually the same company, thought obviously they are in the same group. Whenever I have received a refund in a store I have had to chip and PIN the same card to get my refund... They can see the last 4 digits, that's all. They can only void a payment before it is processed by the banking system, and it isn't an easy process at all. What I would do with this one is contact M&S credit card rather than the store. I have set my bank on a couple of companies in the past to force a refund, but in this case I don't think it will help too much as firstly, they won't like taking on their sister company, and more importantly you have been offered/given a refund. Also, part of the process for a bank getting your money back is to block that merchant from making further charges to the card, and that would mean either replacing the card or not using it at M&S. It could be possible to kindly request that they pay you by bank transfer so that you can pay it off the card before it starts accruing interest.0
