Dead Samsung Galaxy Tab2 After 13 months

Hi,

Please can someone help: I purchased a tablet from Currys PC World Ebay Outlet store (item was "Grade A Refurbished" - which I recall from the time meant there was nothing wrong with it, just that it had been bought and returned by someone previously) that has stopped working (it is totally dead and unresponsive) after less than 13 months' usage (usage that was very light and always in accordance with the manufacturer's stipulations - ie the unit has not been misused, damaged or otherwise abused).

I written to the Currys PC World Ebay site a few times and have even quoted I wanted something done per my Sale of Goods Act right to no avail - here's their latest reply:

"Again, I am sorry to hear your encountering difficulties with your purchase.
We note you purchased the product on 29th July 2014, and the item was sold as "Refurbished Grade A", with a 12month warranty. As you correctly identify, the warranty period has now expired, and as such we are unable to accept a return of the product under warranty.
We note you seek a return on the basis of the provision of the Sale of Goods Act.
The issue you describe is not indicative of a manufacturing defect, that would otherwise render the product unfit for purpose, or of unsatisfactory quality, but rather an issue attributable to wear and tear, or a malfunction that has developed through use and the passage of time. The product has evidently serviced your needs satisfactorily since it's purchase over 14 months ago and accordingly, has conformed to the provisions of the legislation. As such, a return of this product cannot be accepted.
We appreciate this will be disappointing, but you will understand we must adhere to the warranty provisions and policy in place at the point of sale"

I find it totally unacceptable for an item such as the Samsung tablet, which I purchased at a substantial cost (around £180) in good faith, to last barely a year. How can I force Currys PC World to honour my Sale of Goods Act rights?

Many thanks for responding in advance.

Cheers!

    At this stage, as it is more than six months old, the legislation (which you should be familiar with if you are quoting it) requires you to prove that the fault was inherant, and not caused through misuse, or wear and tear.

    If you can prove this, you'll be fine. If not, you cannot force anything.

    Maybe a battery/charging issue?

    If you google "samsung tab 2 dead", the results indicate it is a battery/charging issue and there are a few pages recommending different fixes. Might be worth giving them a try if you havent already.

  • Many thanks, Vyle and Unholyangel. The latest in this saga's that I've written to customer services at Currys PC World (rather than continuing the correspondence with their Ebay outlet store (not sure it will get me anywhere as all they've come back with after three days is confirmation of my invoice details...

    Anyway, per Unholyangel's suggestion, I resolved to try some of the suggestions from a Google search... However, even before I could try anything like hard reboots, upon plugging the tablet it, it just started charging and then switched on (yes, I did try plugging in before today and it didn't work)! Although I don't trust the thing any more in light of it just conking out for a few days like that, at least if Currys PC World don't want to know, it's working again!

    Thanks again for your responses, which are much appreciated!

    Cheers!

    I had exactly the same problem with a Galaxy note 10.1 about 9 or 10 months ago and like yours, it wouldn't turn on or charge.

    Despite it being left on charge for a few days, the battery was still showing as being totally flat and following a Google search, I just left it a couple of days and it started normally and since then, it's been perfect.

    This does seem to be fairly common with Samsung tablets and appears to be a safety feature where a totally flat battery is only allowed a very small charge to stop it overheating.

    What charger you use also appears to be an important factor as well.

    Let's be fair though, Currys have only done as the sales of goods act asks them to. If you hold up your end of the bargain, you'll probably find they'll repair/refund/replace for you.

    You state you bought it thirteen months ago, but Curry reply says both two months ago and fourteen months ago.

    Which is correct? Or is there a typo?

    Thanks for the link -it's indeed worrying to see how many other people have had the same problem with their Samsung devices...(I agree with some of the posters on the forum you sent a link to, that Samsung should issue a recall in light of the numerous people facing this problem)

    @SuperHan
    What you say's fair enough and correct but for an ordinary, non-technical person it's like next to impossible to 'prove' a device was faulty to begin with... How exactly is one to do that? I'd probably need to pay a professional to review and give a cause as they see it for the tablet not working, which is not only hasslesome in its own right, but would also involve an upfront cost with no guarantee the retailer would reinburse this cost...

    @Inner Zone
    I purchased it online on 29-Jul-13 - where in Currys reply it states 2014, that's indeed a typo (I should've called that out in my original post - sorry).

    Anyway, the latest update's that I'm still waiting to hear back from customer services since writing to them to confirm my purchase details over a week ago (think they're hoping I just go away)...

    Same old Currys then.. John Lewis would be more expensive but would have covered the product for longer.

    But the charging issue - first try a new lead and charger (sorry I know that the lead for the SGT2 is proprietary).

    btw. the SGT2 does NOT have a reset hole.

    If this happens again try taking out any SD or SIM cards before trying to reboot it. Then try rebooting either with the charger connected or not. Another alternative is to let the battery totally discharge for about a week before you try to recharge and reboot - this sometimes works. if this problem continues I suspect the battery is duff - it can be replaced but is a skilled job.

    good luck.
