    Hi Sarah,
Sounds really frustrating but you aren't the only one this has happened to believe me!
I just read back through your posts and it sounds like foxes may be disturbing him? Even if you don't see them every night Harley can hear them or even imagine he can hear them?

He is probably either worried by the foxes or is keen to get after them?
As a pup I expect he is worried and is barking out of fear?

Does he sleep in his crate in the kitchen? He will almsot certainly feel happier if you bring him closer to where you sleep? I appreciate not everyone wants their dog sleeping in their bedroom. If you don't then could the landing near your bedroom be a compromise?

I would also be weaning him out of the crate and getting him used to sleeping in a nice comfy soft bed?

There are several options if you don't want to bring him upstairs:

    • Try an Adaptil plug in near his bed.
    • Make sure he is warm enough at night now the nights are getting colder.
    • In the short term you could turn the heating in the room that he sleeps right up, that will probably zonk him out and might get him out of the habit?
    • Leave him a nylabone or something "new" in his crate that might keep him occupied if he is woken by the foxes.
    • Lavender essential oil is also very calming. Don't put it on him, but you could put some on a tissue near his bed (but not so he can eat it!!)
    • Rescue Remedy drops diluted in water and dropped in his mouth before bed might also help if it is an anxiety issue.
Edited to add: You might also want to try leaving a radio on quietly with something like Classic FM playing to help drown out any outside noises he can hear?

You also might want to start teaching him a "rest" or "bed" or "sleep" word in the day, so if you do get up in the night you can repeat this command. If you do get up in the night, be as "boring" as possible, so no treats, no excitement so he isn't wanting you to get up for treats or a fuss.

Good luck Sarah, let us know how you get on x

He is a puppy and even if he was an adult it's too cold for most dogs to sleep outside in the winter in this country. I know lots of people used to keep their dogs out side and some probably still do, but not really kind for a family pet IMHO? Plus he will probably bark even more if he is kept outside?

Thanks for the tips, OH is not ready to have him up on the landing yet, so not pushing it.

Will try the radio tonight, hopefully if it is a fox, it will just go away and leave harley alone :rotfl::rotfl:

  • I thought I would ask Tesco if they would be rolling out the coupon trial and got a reply today.

    Its not good news :(

    Hi Poppy

I’m sorry for the delay getting back to you.

I’m afraid we are not extending the competitor coupon trial. I’m sorry for any disappointment caused.

    Kind Regards,

The way to get round the hubby is to push for Harley to sleep in the bedroom, then "settle" for him sleeping on the landing. ;)

    Hustle, hustle. :D
