Tesco Laptop Wireless Adapter Less Than A Fiver!!!

I bought one of these Microdigital PCMCIA card from Tesco in Dundee. There were around ten on the shelf and they were all priced at £4.99 :-)
To clarify... these cards are rebranded Belkin units (The Belkin name is seen on the underside of the card)
The driver cd included has drivers to allow this card to work on laptops running Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows ME, WIndows 2000 and Windows XP.
I bought it to turn my old Sony Vaio running 98 SE into a usable surfing laptop for use in the kitchen :-)0 -
Apologies if the previous answers already answer my question, but I need techie things explaining in idiotspeek ; )
My friend has moved to Brighton for a few months only. Her flat has no phone line and it would be too expensive to set one up for just a few months (not to mention possibly being tied into a 12 month contract when she'll only be there 4 months).
She has a 3 year old laptop, works fine and connects to the internet ok via usb cable but probably doesn't have inbuilt wifi.
If she got one of these cards, would she be able to use it in cafe's etc that have free wifi for customers?
If the wifi card alone does work, would she still need to have her own broadband provider as well, or use theirs?
If the £4.99 wifi card isn't enough, what does she need to 'piggyback' in a cafe?
Sorry for the hijack :embarasse:embarasse0 -
@ Lurker. The card should be fine for connecting to free wireless hot spots. No other hardware or broadband connection is needed in that case. This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

Yes just adding the card (providing it has a PCMCIA slot) would work in any internet cafe, McDonalds etc. Would also work on anyone else's wireless connection in the neighbourhood........but thats not legal :eek:The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.0 -
Many thanks to the OP, I remembered about this while in Tesco this afternoon and got the last one on the shelf. In my Tesco they are on an end aisle amongst an odd assortment of reduced stuff.0
