Hi,

I just put up a few items on Ebay, and I accidentally listed one as buy it now for 99p when I meant to do normal auction. I tried to revise item but within 20 seconds somebody went in won it and has paid.

Please, how can I refund them their money, it was an honest mistake I have 150 feedback at 100%. I really need the money and cant give my item away when its worth £25+

I just know they are going to be unreasonable and demand I post the item, when its a clear mistake.

Well the good news is you can only get one defect for this, however cross the buyer is.

Firstly, to have any chance at all of escaping without a defect, and i think your chances are slim, email buyer, apologise profusely, then apologise again. OPen a case to cancel the transaction using option 'other' and then immediately refund the paypal payment via the ebay system.

There are lots of risks with this, firstly buyer can refuse the cancellation , but your FVFs (assuming this was post free) are only 10p so not the end of the world- however the mutual might tee him off enough to leave you a negative. If you don't send the cancellation request and just refund you get a defect automatically.

Incidentally, buyer will not be acting unreasonably if they expect you to honour the sale. The mistake was yours, not theirs.

If this item was worth a lot more than 99p why on earth are you risking a 99p start- even if you had set it up as an auction as you intended, it could till have sold on first bid.

  • Have you contacted the buyer to try and calmly explain? Perhaps they will be willing to agree to a mutual cancellation, although it's very unlikely.

I guess if you'd just bought a £25 item for 99p then you would be very unwilling to cancel the purchase.

  • Thanks for the info, where do I cancel the item? I have looked in all the options where I see the item in "sold" but cancel is not listed.

    Also what is FVF?

    I charged £3 for postage

This explains how to send a cancellation

    FVF is final value fee.

FVF= Final value fees and with a total of £3.99 your FVFs will be 40p. You can't just cancel, you go through the option of 'resolve a problem' and then mutually cancel.

You need to be straight onto the buyer now, the quicker you do this the less likely the buyer is to be angry.

If you are sure you must cancel then do it now, email buyer, send mutual cancellation request and refund, don't delay.

  • Thanks for the info. I have emailed a very apologetic email. I will let you know the outcome, it will be very sad to lose my 100% that I have had for a decade, but rather that than lose £25 or so.
  • I got a message that the item has been cancelled. I am still on 100% thankfully, and have sent the buyer a message thanking them profusely.
  • This happened to me a few weeks ago but I was the buyer. Not as high a value item as yours as it only went for just over £4 (not to me as I had no intention of bidding again).

The seller apologised but blamed ebay for the mistake. I was happy to let them cancel the sale but when they sent the cancellation request through they blamed me saying I had changed my mind which really annoyed me.

I did plan to leave them a negative for firstly blaming ebay and then saying I changed my mind but in the end I just let it go.

In the past I started a listing at 99p and hoped it would make a lot more unfortunately it went for 99p but I did honour the sale - lesson learnt do not start at 99p.

Buyer can still leave you feedback.

If relisting start at the lowest price you want, don't gamble on a 99p start .

    .

They only did that to avoid a defect - nothing personal and no affect on the buyers account.

Ebay punishing people when both sides agree to cancel is the problem.

I have never refused to honour a sale and would have even honoured this one.

But i had a lucky escape recently when i listed at £199 instead of £299. Sold within seconds, like this one.

It was packed ready to go when i got an email asking to send to a different address. I refused and was then abused saying they don't live at old address anymore and i was being unreasonable.

I was more than happy to break the deal at this point and Ebay removed the neg :)
