Upgrading Ford key?

i have a 2004 Ford Fusion, and was wondering how much it would cost to upgrade from the old style key to the new 'flip' type. I have seen products on eBay like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-MONDEO-FOCUS-FIESTA-KA-TRANSIT-REMOTE-KEY-FOB-FLIP-CONVERSION-CASE-UPGRADE-/281140592915?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Safety_Security&hash=item4175490113

How easy is this to use? Would someone like Timpsons be able to cut the key? Would remote entry still work?
Can't find much info out there!

Do you have 2 working keys?

If you do then get a used genuine folding ford key and use that instead. Some of those ebay flip cases are crap. One key cutter commented on the metal for the being of very poor quality and refused to cut it because it was likely to snap in use.

Timpsons can cut the key but silly prices. I paid £2 to get one cut in my local market stall. The guys been there for many many years.

I have a jaguar x-type key on my mondeo.

  • I do, yes. Where would I get a used key? Dont think I'd have anyone to cut it for me tho...
  • Any key cutters can do them. Its a standard tibbe key. Even try a ford dealer, Sometimes they can be cheap for key blanks and cutting.

I bought my flip key off ebay with the new blank ready fitted. £2 to get it cut and program it yourself.

Insert key 1 ingition on and off.
insert key 2 ignition on and off.

Insert new key and switch on, Wait a few seconds. Switch off and wait 10 seconds.

    You now have 3 keys.

OK. So let me see if I have this right...

    1. I buy something like this.
    2. Get the blade cut (would I just need my key and the new key?)
    3. Program the new key.

    Now, a couple of questions:
    - How can I be sure that this will work with my car (all listings say to 'check').
    - Does the 'programming' bit also do the remote locking/unlocking, or simply the immobiliser? What do I need to do to program the remote bit of the key?
    - I thought of replacing the chips inside, but as my key is larger, I doubt they'd fit.

    Thats the immobiliser procedure...

The fob is just as easy....

Switch the ignition on and off 4 times within 6 seconds, A tone sounds.

Press a button on the fob. Then press a button on the next fob if you have several.
Switch the ignition on and off. Done.

    Remotes now programmed.

That key looks like the later one not yours. The chips are different.

  • Ah, the keg won't look my mine as I'm wanting to upgrade it. Can't this be done?
  • Its not the key thats the issue its the glass chip inside. Ford seemed to have used different ones at different times.

make sure it says the correct model and year for your car.
