Background music on TV programmes driving me mad

My husband spends every evening watching tv. No matter what channel he watches, there is always irritating background music to the programmes and on commercial channels the sound on the adverts always doubles. It is driving me to the point where I want to throw a brick theiugh the tv acreen. He is deaf in one ear and doesn't notice.
I like to be quiet or read a book but its impossible to concentrate and I generally end up having to keave the room. He does occasionally use headphones where I really complain. .
Does anybody else find this background music as irritating as I do and can anything be done to influence the TV programme makers to cut out the background music?

I think the issue is more you are trying to do a quiet activity in the same room as someone watching TV with a hearing issue (so will naturally have the TV on louder)
I don't have a problem with any background music. Yes adverts are louder but that just seems to be a thing now, probably to grab your attention, I only find it an issue when I'm trying to be quiet and the adverts are loud enough to wake up someone upstairs.
No I don't think there is anything to do to change it as I feel even if there was distracting background music the fact you are not watching the TV but trying to read in the same room is the issue rather than anything on the TV itself.
If I want to read a book I wouldnt do it in the room with someone watching TV as I would get distracted by it, but thats not a fault of the TV.0 -

To answer your actual question; Yes, it does annoy a lot of other people. I must admit that it doesn't bother me but I have seen complaints from a lot of people on AV forums. Many people find they can't hear the dialogue properly if the background music is (or FX are) very loud.
Unfortunately it's unlikely that anything would be done about it as directors generally make things the way they like them rather than the way their audience does.
It's rather like the excessive DOGs on TV which virtually everyone who expresses an opinion dislikes to a greater or lesser extent, but which the TV stations seem to love (and justify on the most spurious of grounds). Admittedly, the implementation has improved a lot. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

Yes, it annoys me intensely. It seems to be particularly bad on a lot of the programmes my OH watches on Discovery etc. The American car restoration programmes etc. It's incessant, then as you said the volume goes up when the adverts come on. Even some of the wildlife type programmes are ruined by it nowadays, such as the Deadly Islands series.
Mind you, Discovery is rubbish these days anyway. In the past you could pretty much guarantee the quality of the programming but now it's mostly cheap reality style programmes. The programmes are rubbish so they pump out the music to try to make them seem more exciting.0 -
What annoys me is background music on the radio news!!0

What annoys me about background soundtracks is the way they sometimes interfere with the sound from the background or dialogue.
The number of times I've watched someone alone in a darkened house, listening for a quiet noise while some double bass is groaning away, drowning out the knife wielding killer/red herring cat is too many to count. Don't know what I'm doing, but doing it anyway... :huh:0 -
