Attempted Burglary.

Someone tried to break into my house this afternoon while I was inside. The Police and Soco have been and I will get a crime number tomorrow. My house insurance is due next month do I need to tell my insurer about this, if I don't tell them will my insurance be invalid. Only minor damage was caused to a window and door.

If you get asked has anyone attempted to break into your house then yes you would need to declare it - but I dont think that is one of the questions.

    Who's the insurer?

    There are really two questions.

    1. Do you need to tell your current insurer now?

    2. Do you need to tell a new insurer when you compare and get new cover next month.

On 2: the short answer is that you need to answer the questions that are asked truthfully.

So if asked: have you made any claims, you'd say no.
Have you suffered any thefts or attempted thefts, you'd say yes.
  • Hi hugoshavez/ My present insurer is Esure but I normally switch between Esure and Sheilas Wheels each year. They are the same company but you get slightly better terms as a new customer.

The help screen with esure says:-

Home claims, loss or damage in the last 3 years
You must declare if you or anyone, living with you have made any household claims in the last 3 years even if they were not insured, did not make a claim, the claim was turned down, or was not pursued.
  • You can often report an "incident" to your insurers and ask for it to be treated as "For Information Only". This means you have told them but are not at that stage pursuing a claim, if it's not worth doing so. However, if at a later date if becomes apparent that you DO need to claim, maybe because the damage will cost more to repair than you thought, or because you realise more goods are missing that you had not noticed, at least the insurers can't complain about "late notification" if you hadn't already reported the incident. It protects you to mention it. If you don't make a claim, and are getting alternative quotes prior to the renewal, you can tell them there's been an incident but that no claim is being pursued, if that is truly the case at the time.

    Oh dear, that's bloody awful.

must declare if you ...have made any household claims ... even if they ... did not make a claim

    Hi

OK, in terms of letting them know immediately:

The esure policy only requires you to notify events likely to result in a claim. So there's no need to tell them anything now.

At renewal the important thing will be to answer the precise question asked.
