am considering an extension to a house we are close to buying ,and wondered if there are any cheap, or free, simple to use computer programmes to give the other half an idea of plans?

You could have a look at 'Sketchup' - it's an easy to use 3D design software.
I used the old free version, when it was still owned by Google and that wasn't bad, the current owners still offer a free version - Sketchup Make.0 -
I used Sketchup Make whilst we were waiting for our house to be built - I managed to create a pretty accurate model of the house from the builder's plans. It took me a while to learn how to use if properly (was the first time I'd ever used CAD software) but as there were no showhomes in the style of our house its been really useful for us to visualise our new home.0

Marvellous! Many thanks people, Im a complete beginner so it may end up looking like the crooked house, but I'll get there eventually!0

I used floor planner to design my house. They offer a free version which is pretty capable and there are Youtube videos to explain how to use it.0
